Email from New York Admin 8/28/09 Okay, I finally received a reply from both department heads. They confirm what Ms. Gibbson said and vow to have the website corrected. First off I would like to apologize to you and all geocachers on Long Island for the WMA issues. I was working with the best information I had which now we find out was obsolete information. Its to bad you or I didn't contact Division of Fish, Wildlife and Marine Resources or Bureau of lands way back. Problem is we both assumed the DEC website was correct and didn't question it. The only requirement imposed by DEC for placing a cache on any state land on Long Island is the owners real name and address must be in the cache. This is covered in Part 190.8/W. Generally I won't ask unless its a vacation cache or someone from out of state. I'm willing to assume the locals know and follow DEC rules. On the other hand its not likely someone visiting New York State from Nevada will have a clue there is a part 190.8/w. Game on!
