Email from New York Admin 8/28/09 Okay, I finally received a reply from both department heads. They confirm what Ms. Gibbson said and vow to have the website corrected. First off I would like to apologize to you and all geocachers on Long Island for the WMA issues. I was working with the best information I had which now we find out was obsolete information. Its to bad you or I didn't contact Division of Fish, Wildlife and Marine Resources or Bureau of lands way back. Problem is we both assumed the DEC website was correct and didn't question it. The only requirement imposed by DEC for placing a cache on any state land on Long Island is the owners real name and address must be in the cache. This is covered in Part 190.8/W. Generally I won't ask unless its a vacation cache or someone from out of state. I'm willing to assume the locals know and follow DEC rules. On the other hand its not likely someone visiting New York State from Nevada will have a clue there is a part 190.8/w. Game on! New York Admin volunteer cache reviewer geocaching.com |

Okay, Babesiosis. What the heck ARE you, and how did my mother-in-law get it when she lives in Port Jefferson? Well, it's another disease carried by our good friend, the deer tick. It has been found on Fire Island, but seems to have jumped to the mainland here. The lady in question was feeling pretty punk; no energy at all (and this is a sprightly woman who spends a lot of time outdoors gardening), excessive joint pain, and eventually a lack of appetite and believe it or not, lack of thirst. This got her going to her doctor, who either had a hunch or has seen it before, ran the test for it, and started treatment immediately. Thank you, Dr. Gives-a-Damn. I believe this one slips through the cracks more often than not, seeing how "rare" it is... it sure shocked us. Babesiosis has the potential to be truly nasty, folks. Keep an eye out for this parasitic "bug". |

Let's see, you've got your GPS, and you've got your coordinates all picked out. What next? As any experienced geocacher will tell you, the hunt has its own set of challenges, and it seems a basic kit is in order to avoid some of the more common pitfalls a newbie will be thwarted by.
I've created a list of essentials, non-essential-but-helpful, and extras that just make things easier. |
